Two Bridgeport Businessmen Honored By Junior Achievement

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Two Bridgeport business leaders, including a former City Council member, are among four people who will be inducted next month into Junior Achievement of Western Connecticut's Dr. George R. Dunbar Free Enterprise Hall of Fame.

During an Oct. 4 event at the Holiday Inn in Bridgeport, Jack Barnes, president and chief of People's United Bank in Bridgeport, and John Stafstrom Jr., lawyer at Pullman and Comley in Bridgeport and former city council member, will be honored by the organization. 

They, along with Traci Morris, chief executive officer of Brookfield Global Relocation Services, and Philip White, chief executive officer of Better Packages, are to be added to the organization's Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is an honor for business leaders who have made contributions to their communities as well as their businesses. 

Barnes joined People's United Financial as senior executive vice president and chief administrative officer following the acquisition of Chittenden Corporation in early 2008. In this position, he managed IT, operations, real estate services and business services. 

In 2016, Barnes, was appointed to the Financial Services Roundtable board of directors, a Washington D.C.-based advocacy organization. He is also chairman of the People’s United Community Foundation (PUCF) board of directors. 

Barnes is a graduate of Northeastern University and received his master's degree in business administration from the University of Vermont. 

Stafstrom is chair of the public finance department at Pullman & Comley in Bridgeport and is experienced in the fields of government and municipal law, public finance and commercial finance and commercial transactions.

He's also the founder of Career Resources, Inc., and was also named as the 2013 Ringmaster for the Bridgeport Barnum Festival. He's also a former member of the Bridgeport city council and served on the National Leadership Council of Lambda Legal. 

He earned a bachelor's degree in economics and accounting from College of Holy Cross in 1978 and his law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1981.
